Every Day is a New Day... Literally!
Here I am, another night watching my beloved PenDell sleeping. Oh my though, how things have changed since my last post.
PenDell is a miracle. He is speaking full sentences in an audible voice most of the time. He still stumbles on words and struggles when he has a train of thought but the words come out differently than his train of thought.
He knows who I am and is able to find my name most of the time. He knows Erin and Evan and Isabel and Sadie.
Last night, he asked me to tell him the story of this journey and what happened to him. He listened intently to every word. He listened with amazement and wonder. We laughed and we cried. He will ask me to tell him the story again. For now, though, he heard and understood more deeply than any time before.
Ann Foorman has come in the last few days and spent time with him sharing attunements, rubbing his feet, talking about friends and memories. While Ann is here, I focus on work and take care of things that are otherwise undone which is so helpful.
This week, PenDell has walked farther each day. He has balanced on a balance board. He stood on a Bosu ball and shifted from heel to toe and right to left. He has ridden the bike longer and harder. He sat on a yoga ball while throwing a ball to a trainer and naming off colors then states. Multi-tasking is one of the biggest challenges as his brain recovers yet he is doing more and more of it successfully each day.
He has asked several times to play cards. So, tonight, we started learning to play Gin Rummy. It was harder than he thought it would be. We played for a while and then we folded and agreed that we will play again tomorrow 🙂 Get the cards out Garret and Vivian, he will soon be ready and feeling lucky!
Some dear friends have come to visit recently. PenDell is so gracious with everyone. He tires easily though, so visits are relatively brief.
I am amazed every day as he embraces what is before him so courageously. His current reality is always being revealed to him. He remembers some of what he has done the day before, in the morning, a moment ago… but not all and not always.
Ann Foorman has captured some sweet moments in photos. Check for a thumbnail at the bottom of this post and click on it.
Rebecca Hynes generously offered to digitize the cassette tape of PenDell’s songs that I have been listening to and playing for him. So, finally, I have links to share with you! Thank you Rebecca, now we can all hear him sing!
Then, as I was writing this post, Jenny James messaged me that she had created a YouTube of
How Shall We Give Thee Glory. Thank you Jenny.
